Building The Wooden Playset Or Jungle Gym Of Your Child's Dreams On A Budget!

As life in the suburbs has gone to bigger and better things.. from square footage to yard space... children's play sets have grown up and gone in the direction of bigger is better as well. It wasn't so long ago that if your friend down the street had a simple swing set - they were the envy of the neighborhood. Now the envy of the neighborhood child is the friend who's family has graced them with the newest "Play - System."

Right Angle Cordless Drill

The terms Play-systems, Jungle Gyms, Forts and Swing Sets are pretty much interchangable. At many stores selling outdoor play equipment calling a swing set a "Play System" simply means they've added a few extra dollars in the cost of the product. And while the sticker shock of such systems will remind many of us of how much we paid for our first car... it simply doesn't have to be this expensive.

Right Angle Cordless Drill

With some very basic carpentry skill matched with time and a little effort, a Do-It-Yourself Swing Set or Fort is easily achievable. D.I.Y. swing set kits today are basic and easy to understand. These kits come with fully illustrated step-by-step manual taking you through the entire process from lumber purchase, cutting, drilling, and assembling to adding the finishing touches. You could even make it a Christmas gift... one that will undoubtedly seed great anticipation for spring, but that would allow for proper planning and budgeting of the system.

Play set

First a quick run-down of some typical questions asked when planning for a Do-It-Yourself swing set:

What's my budget?

Some smaller D.I.Y. Play Sets run as little as 295$. ** BUDGET SAVER** Many play sets have to charge a hefty fee for shipping the slide. That is because this is the only item that has to be boxed and freight shipped. A good way to save money is to buy your slide locally. Check with your local big-box hardware store first.

Lumber, bought by you locally, for smaller jungle gym plans is approx. 5 = A total price for a nice play set would run 0. On average (including your lumber costs) a basic set can be built for under 0, medium sized under 0, largest models ,200. (That is cost including the slide)

How much time do I have available to work on this project?

Most of medium sized D.I.Y. swing set, fort kit and jungle gym plans with swing beams can be completed in a weekend (12-16 hours).

Good swing set kit plans help by avoiding pre-drilling and angle cuts when possible. In addition, they keep the design of their frames and swing beams simple without comporomising strength.

Do I have the required tools?

All D.I.Y. jungle gym plans will include a 'required tool list'. Believe it or not.. 90% of the plans available require 3 "power tools" a 'circular saw' and 'electric or cordless drill'. Only commonly found tools and basic carpentry skills are required to assemble these kits. The swing set plans, swings, accessories, hardware, etc. is all included with the kit. Lumber is purchased by you locally and consists of 2x4's, 2x6's, 5/2x6's and 4x4's.

Here is a quick guide to an easy and budgeted play system.

1. Research! Start by determining the system you desire **Determine if a slide for your kit is available locally. This will save you close to 100$ on the cost of shipping a slide as freight from the manufacturer!** Kits (without the slide) typicaly includes: brackets / bolts / swing seats / chains / tarp roof (if included) and blue prints. Make note of what tools are required.

2. Purchase your swing kit. A standard kit for a 5' x 5' Fort and three swing beam system costs around 0 (Not including freight shipped slide)

3. Once you have your kit, determine and budget for the lumber purchase. A way to save a few extra dollars is to price the lumber by contacting local lumber stores. Don't always assume that your local big-box hardware store has the cheapest wood available. Taking the time to price your lumber sheet can save you as much as 25% on the total cost of your system. The lumber cost for a system like the one mentioned about should run around 0

4. The final step before building is to determine if you want to prep the ground area. Will you want to use a tiller / dig the area out and add mulch or padding of any type? While this will add to the final cost of the project it may save you possible bumps and bruises in the future.

Finished. Now with a little sweat equity you have built a ,400 play system for nearly half the price. Keep in mind that the above is assuming you are looking at a basic Fort / Slide / and Swing Set. The designs of play systems available get much more dynamic for not much more in cost.

Special Jig Saw Features

There are many special jig saw features that entice the individual that enjoys woodworking and home improvement projects. This type of saw is one that is considered to be both versatile and convenient. By combining the functionality of a band saw with the features of a scroll saw, this is a power tool that is high in demand. There are many different types of jig saws on the market today. If you are in the market for this type of tool, you should become familiar with the special features that are available. This will allow you to choose the best tool for your needs.

Right Angle Cordless Drill

The first and most common feature in jig saws is the fact that they have different speeds that can be used while performing various jobs. We all know that when working with certain materials we may need to adjust the speed of the saw that we are working with.

Right Angle Cordless Drill

On the average, the lowest speeds associated with jig saws are about five hundred individual strokes each minute in use. However, there are a few high quality models on the market today that can work at approximately three thousand strokes each minute in use.

One of the most common tasks associated with maintaining a jig saw is changing the blade. Most units do not even require special tools to switch out blades. Additionally, many units come with a built in vacuum system that will allow you to clean the dust created during cuts to make sure that there is no obstruction in your work.

The next feature associated with the jig saw is the supports in place for the blades. During use, the blades typically flex. However, with guards in place, this is drastically reduced. If you are interested in purchasing a jig saw, be certain to pay attention to the special features. While there are many, the specific features mentioned here are among the most common.

Milwaukee 3107-6 7.0 Amp 1/2-Inch Right Angle Drill with D-Handle Overview

As everyone knows, both plumbing and electrical work require drilling in tight spots. While the Milwaukee Hole Hawg may be the choice for most professional plumbers and electricians, this less-expensive right-angle drill is a solid option to consider for the same applications. Featuring a slim, lightweight design and great versatility, Milwaukee's right-angle drill has a 1/2-inch chuck and three speed ranges and is fully adjustable. The head and handle swivel 360 degrees and can be locked tight in any position, allowing you to fit this drill anywhere this drill could possibly fit. HVAC contractors can use this drill with bits to 4-5/8 inches without a problem. And, if necessary, the right-angle mechanism can be removed and the drill converted to straight D-handle use. If you have major remodel or construction plans, this is a smart drill to consider. --Tim Block

Used Wood Lathe For Sale? Is it a Bargain Or a Bust?

So you have seen an add for a used wood lathe and you are on your way to see it. Will you find a bargain or a bust? What should you look for before parting with your hard earned cash?

Right Angle Cordless Drill

Wood lathes are very basic woodworking machines. They have a set of ways on which the rest of the lathe is built. These are usually reinforced angle iron set exactly parallel to one another. Make sure they are:

Right Angle Cordless Drill

1. Flat. Use a straight edge to ensure that the surfaces are flat and sight along them with winding sticks to make sure they are coplanar.

2. Clean. A little rust is OK and minor amounts of finish on them is to be expected. These are easily cleaned with a little fine wet and dry sandpaper and is general maintenance. However, a bit of heavy paint can cover a hard to fix ding or a place where rust was able to cause serious corrosion.

Most wood lathes have the tail stock on the right and the headstock on the left. The tail stock holds the tail center for spindle turning and may be used to hold other items such as a Jacob's chuck from time to time. Make sure:

1. It moves easily along the ways and locks down securely when fastened. This will happen with a bolt that connects to a plate below the ways and may be secured with a handle or a wrench. Once fastened down you should not be able to grab it and move it.

2. It does not wobble in the ways. They are parallel and the tail stock needs to be kept parallel within them. A few tail stocks have adjustments to correct them but not all.

3. The Morse taper is clean and in good shape.

4. It lines up with the headstock. Put a center in both and make sure the points are in the same plane vertically and horizontally. If not and there is no adjustments available, walk away. This is no bargain.

The tool rest and banjo between the tail stock and head stock need to move easily along the ways and be sturdy. They are easily maintained and corrected for minor dings and hits.

The headstock is the heart of the lathe. It is also the part that can be fixed most thoroughly. Belts and bearings are usually inexpensive and reasonable to replace. Make sure:

1. The motor works well.
2. It is secure to the ways.
3. If it rotates it has to lock down well.
4. The Morse taper is clean and in good shape.
5. It lines up with the tail stock. If it does not, walk away.

There are a lot of good bargains in used lathes and more come up as wood turners upgrade to larger tools. Looking for a few minor things can allow for the bargains to keep from being busts.

How to Install Your Own Kitchen - Part 4 - Installing Kitchen Base Cabinets

I expect by now that anyone following this series of articles is either contemplating setting up their own kitchen installation business or wondering how to sell the expensive tools they think they invested in before the plaster fell off the walls, the pipes flooded the kitchen and the wall units collapsed.

Right Angle Cordless Drill

For those of you who've already sign written the van, congratulations and for those of you filling in the "tools for sale" adverts, hang fire, replace that pen with a cordless drill and don't give up so easy.

Right Angle Cordless Drill

Choosing the right base units

Base units come in various configurations and are available in flat pack or rigid format. Board thickness, construction methods and accessories also highlight the differences between manufacturers. The majority have adjustable legs fitted for ease of fitting and to prevent water ingress.

Speaking as a former installer my personal choice for strength and longevity would be to choose a carcass of at least 18mm construction with a back of at least 9mm board thickness and metal sided soft close drawer boxes again with a solid base of at least 15mm board. Rigid units will save on installation time but otherwise carry no major advantage over flat pack units.

Many manufacturers build co-ordinated carcasses that match their door finishes. This is a useful advantage when ends are visible but as an alternative you can fit a coordinated end support panel or even a door fascia.

The majority of carcasses are constructed using melamine faced chipboard and particular care should be given to the sink base carcass which will be extremely vulnerable to water ingress over it's lifetime. To counteract this problem I have developed a product called Unitsaver. I hasten to add that I'm still waiting for the call from a cabinet manufacturer who sees the product as a great addition to their range so until then I'm afraid it isn't available to the consumer.

Tools required for the job

- Cordless screwdriver
- Hand Tools
- Jigsaw
- 5mm HSS Drill bit
- 50mm, 25mm, 30mm and 16mm screws
- Pair of clamps
- Holesaws
- Spirit level
- Tape Measure
- Power Drill
- Compass and pencil.
- Safety Equipment - Goggles, Dust Mask etc
- Extension Lead

The fitting

Fitting should commence in the corner of the kitchen. Starting at the highest point in the floor, a level line should be transferred to the walls marking the finished height of your cabinets.

Corner cabinets are generally available in two configurations, an L-shaped unit, usually 900mm width and a conventional corner cabinet available in sizes from 900mm to 1200mm. If the design allows then one, the other, or both will be suitable for your kitchen.

Adjust the legs to ensure the cabinet meets the line and, using a spirit level, adjust to ensure the unit is plumb and level. Continue the above method with all subsequent units and clamp together making sure all edges are flush and level.

To connect units together, use clamps inside the units to adjoin the units both top and bottom, ensuring that the front and top edges are flush. When clamping together protect units by using hardboard off cuts or similar behind the clamp jaws.

Remove one screw from each of the hinge back plates and rotate back plate to expose area behind. Using a 5mm wood bit, drill part way through the first carcass behind the hinge back plate and fix the two together with a cordless screwdriver using 30mm screws for 18mm units and for 25mm screws for 15mm units. Reposition back plate and fix. This will serve to conceal the fixing. If however, both units are connecting on the closing side of the doors - use the same procedure and cap the screws.

Where ends are not visible it is advantageous to cut off the service void from the bottom of the cabinets leaving 80mm of the full cabinet depth from the top of the unit. This will serve to overcome any out of true plastering behind the base units and provide an easy means of running cables behind the units after fitting.

Most manufacturers employ a service void of approximately 50mm at the back of base units and this is essential not only for plumbing and electrical services but also for scribing to the walls if necessary. To ensure that no gaps are visible where the last unit meets the wall you may need to scribe the cabinet. To do this, level the cabinet and clamp it to the adjacent one leaving it 30mm proud of the front edge, clamp the units together, set the compass to 30mm between pencil and point and run the point of the compass down the wall keeping it parallel with the pencil point. The pencil line left on the carcass will act as a guide for cutting with a jigsaw. After cutting, fit the cabinet as described above. This will leave a perfect finish to the wall.

When all the cabinets are levelled and in place, they will require fixing to the walls. This will only be required at alternate gables. Hold a 25mm right-angled bracket to the wall and against a gable interior. Mark through the bracket with a pencil to the wall and drill at a downward angle. Insert a rawlplug and fix to the wall using a 50mm screw. Fix the bracket to the cabinet gable using a 16mm screw.

Fitting appliances

An important thing to remember is, when fitting a conventional corner cabinet that has an appliance fitted on the return, to allow sufficient space for the door to open 90? and to ensure that the appliance door has clearance to open without infringing on the door handle. This may require the fitting of a corner fillet manufactured on site but will ensure that your dishes can be placed into a fully open dishwasher.

Remember to align the hob base unit with the extractor. This task takes precedence over all others for the efficient operation of the extractor. It may be necessary to reposition the corner unit but this can be amended by again utilising a filler on the corner base.

When fitting integrated appliances you will need to leave a space between cabinets. Using a straight length of wood or plinth, clamp flush to the already levelled cabinets and use this as a guide for fitting the next cabinet making sure you leave the correct space between the units and this applies to both the front and the back. This method also applies when fitting units either side of a freestanding or range cooker.

Well that's it, you're ready for the worktops, these come in a various materials, the most popular being laminate. In the next article I'll be explaining how to install your worktops and appliances.

Finally, for those of you still debating whether to call in the nearest kitchen installers, I'd like to offer some words of encouragement.

My first installation took place within the confines of Southport Zoo. I had only a variety of hand tools, a power drill, a second hand jigsaw and a strong desire to complete my first kitchen without a hitch. This I did, after three weeks.

It took me so long to complete that they installed a glass screen for visitors to view the monkey installing the kitchen.

So don't throw in the towel, don't sell the tools, put on those overalls and give it another go. It's so easy a monkey could do it.
